The story goes that "Old Josh" lived down the hill south of where the stone now lies, in the Chartwell area.  He failed to turn up for Sunday morning services for some weeks and the vicar called to find out why.  Josh's explanation was that his horse was getting old and was unable to carry him up the steep hill from his house to the top of Horns Hill.  If he walked the horse up the hill he was unable to mount it when he reached the top because he was getting old as well.  The vicar's solution was to get some parishioners to manhandle a piece of rock to the top of the hill for Old Josh to use as a mounting block.  The story does not state if Josh's church attendance improved as a result.
